About Dave:
David started short wave listening in his early teens. Encouraged by G4AEH he took his RAE the same year as his "O" levels and became G8JMO in 1974. Within 3 months of starting study at University College of North Wales (GW3UCB) in 1976, under the guidance of G4DSE he took his morse test and became G4FRE in January 1977. The UCNWARS introduced him to the delights of VHF contesting from Welsh hilltops.

After leaving Universtity he joined the GPO (BT) at their research laboratories at Martlesham where he became an active member of the succesful G4BPO (G4MRS) VHF contest group. During his 15 years at Martlesham he also became involved with the Sheppey Contest Group winning many RSGB trophies. Also during that time he became an active member of the Squarebashers expedition group participating in VHF/Microwave expedions to GB2ZR, GB2YS, GB4GD, EI4VCH, ZB2IQ and 9H3MX

In 1990 he was offered an assignment by BT in NY, USA which lasted 2.5 years and resulted in his obtaining an US Extra Class licence, ending up with the callsign WG3I. During that time he went on expeditions to PJ4 (3 times) ZF1 (twice) and C6A (twice)

In 1994 he was offered a permanent job in the USA and moved to NJ, where he reclaimed his original WW2R callsign. In 1997 he changed employer and moved to Texas and has been operating from that state ever since.

RTTY/PSK31 DX and contesting on VHF and above are the main interests, along with the occasional HF RTTY/CW contest from MW2I

He is the current World distance record holder with W5LUA on 24GHz. In 2003 he was presented with the Chambers award by the Central States VHF for contributions to VHF/UHF

His wife Meg, M0FRE, N2NQI, veteran of many expeditions, will also be going on the expedition to 3B9.
