Picture
of the dayThe 3B9C container is the red one in the centre. Pictured here at Port Mathurin, ready to return to the UK. John, G3WGV writes the final live update from Rodrigues Island. Yesterday we completed packing the container. It took four very full truck loads to get all the equipment to the container port in Port Mathurin. Six of the team, assisted by some of the locals packed the container in about 4 hours, in sweltering heat. Fortunately it didn't rain at all during the packing process, so all the kit was packed dry.
The Customs declarations were duly signed
off and the container was locked and sealed. Literally five minutes
later a great machine swung into action and lifted our container off to
the outbound area of the port. It leaves for Mauritius later today and
we expect it back in England some time in June.
With the container packed, the DXpedition is
finally over. We had a relaxing late afternoon round the pool, followed
by a splendid dinner hosted by the hotel management. It was fascinating
hearing their impressions of 3B9C, all of which were favourable. They
were still somewhat perplexed that a bunch of people would come all the
way to Rodrigues and then spend most of their time sat in front of
radios rather than out diving, boating, swimming and so on. One staff
members asked why we couldn't just sit at home and do the same
thing. That took a bit of explaining!
So here I am, sitting in one of the former
3B9C "shacks", now empty apart from me and this single PC connected to
the Internet. It seems strange to think back over the four weeks of
frenetic activity in this room and in the other shack next door. I'm
looking out over the Indian Ocean for the last time, knowing that at
14:40 today we leave this island paradise, possibly for ever.
So this is the final finale from 3B9C. On
behalf of the entire 3B9C team, I hope that you enjoyed the chase, made
plenty of contacts and look forward to receiving your QSL cards. That
mammoth task that will commence as soon as we get home.
73 from us all. |
