Rodrigues Island saw the largest
invasion of radio amateur ever on Tuesday afternoon. The majority of the 3B9C team left London on Monday 15 March 2004, travelling on the overnight flight to Mauritius. Leaving about an hour behind schedule, the Air Mauritius flight caught up the lost time, with arrival at 1230 local time on Tuesday. Other members of the team had travelled from Paris and Vienna, meeting for the first time at Mauritius. After clearing customs at Mauritius airport, there was time for a brief lunch and a couple of drinks in the bar in the departure lounge. The flight on the ATR-72 from Mauritius to Rodrigues was full and our excess baggage was a challenge for the baggage handlers to load onto the plane. Fortunately, everything made it on the aircraft and safely to Rodrigues. The team was met at Rodrigues airport by Robert, 3B9FR, and his family. Bags were loaded onto a truck, which followed a coach full of operators from one side of the island to the other. Arriving 40 minutes later at the Cotton Bay Hotel, the team was greeted by local musicians and a welcome cool drink. After check-in, it was time to meet in the bar before a leisurely evening meal. At 2200, the team met together to discuss the projects set for the following morning, including unloading the equipment container and transporting everything across the island. Sleep beckoned and the team dispersed for the night, keen to be ready to leave the hotel early on Wednesday morning to start preparations for the 3B9C operation. Go to Wednesday -> |
