3B9C up and running

UPDATE -  Sunday 21, March 2004 UPDATE INDEX

By the end of our second full day, the log has grown to around 23,000 contacts.

Now that we have two day of operating behind us, we are starting to identify the best band opening and closing times for each station.

Although we have propagation predictions, there is nothing better than actual propagation results.

Our StarSoftware logging system allows each operator to check the propagation predictions for each continent, on both short and long path.

This information is available on every computer and gradually builds into actual propagation results based on the 3B9C log. As the DXpedition log grows, the actual propagation becomes an important tool.

For this reason, we will adjust our schedule of operations slightly from Tuesday morning to reflect actual propagation more accurately. This should avoid an operator arriving for a shift and finding that their band doesn't open for another two hours. At the other end of the scale, arriving for a four hour shift and finding the band closing after 30 minutes is frustrating. The new schedule addresses these issues.

In addition, what this means, is that we aim to have operators on up to 12 different band slots at the height of propagation. With 12 stations running at the same time, you should find one of more the 3B9C stations to work.

Nigel, G4KIUEach operator is expected to run a shift for four hours. Team member Nigel, G4KIU says: "The majority of operating slots are for four hours. There are a few operating slots which run to six hours and some for only two. So far, I have had a mixture of all three operating slots lengths, on a variety of bands. Most of the shifts have been very busy, with just one so far where I spent two hours staring at the radio with nothing going on".

We continue to upload our logs once a day. These are sent to two locations and the support team at the other end aim to load the logs on the servers as soon as practical. For this reason, we are unable to advise specific update times.

Yesterday, we started a new page on the site covering feedback and frequently asked questions. The information on this page is our way of trying to answer the large number of incoming emails to our special on-island email account.
